Dr. Nick Dawkins has been at the forefront of promoting exceptional outcomes in student achievement since his time as a teacher, coinciding with a period that researchers have identified as one characterized by “dramatically expanded educational options” and high stakes for academic success among marginalized communities. As Deputy Chief for a major charter organization covering multiple cities in Texas, Nick has dedicated years to fostering equity and rigorous academics in diverse contexts, leading and navigating even amidst controversies surrounding school reform and DEI practices. With over 20 years of experience in schools and non-profits, Nick has a profound understanding, motivation, and dedication to urban youth. His roles as an educator, professor, researcher, and school leader have allowed him to actively work towards closing opportunity gaps and increasing access to transformative experiences for students from various cultural backgrounds across the country. Nick’s doctoral dissertation delves into the challenges faced by Black school leaders in public schools and how we can improve retention, recruitment, and overall student performance outcomes.
